Mk3 Modified Osprey body armour, the last version issued prior to the switch over to the current MTP Mk4 version in service now.
The governemnt's urgent need for an improved armour to reduce UK casualties in Iraq and Afgahanistan brought about the introduction of the Osprey armour around 2005. The Osprey consists of a front and rear panel, joined at the shoulder and waist by velcro, with additional security straps and snap fastners at the shoulder, to prevent the velcro coming unfastened. There are two large zipped pockets to accomadate the 'SAPI' - Small Arms Protective Insert, also known as 'Trauma Plate' in the front and rear. The Osprey vest underwent a number of modifications, this being the Mk3 variant.
